In the early 1900s Coos Bay and North Bend were served by two churches, each having their own pastor. The church in North Bend was called “Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church.” During the depression years the two churches called one pastor to serve them both. Pastors serving the early church were Jensen, Mathiason, Longbecker, and Gross. Differences in 1951 caused many families to leave the North Bend church to join the church in Coos Bay. Augustana’s traveling missionary, Rev. Peter Carlson, came to Marshfield, Oregon in August of 1884. On Sunday evening, September 7, 1884, forty-four persons of Scandinavian descent declared their intent to join the new Lutheran church. Twenty-three others soon added their names.
